Grant for Democracy and Human Rights Projects in Asia (GDHRPA) The Grant for Democracy and Human Rights Projects in Asia (GDHRPA) supports work that contributes to promoting democracy and human rights and the building of international solidarity.
The grant is awarded to non-government organizations in Asia who continually play a significant role in strengthening people's participation and empowerment and in creating a civil society that respects human rights and protects democracy and peace and encourages international solidarity. In 2009, eight (8) organizations from Asia were chosen to be supported for a maximum period of two (2) years.
Gwangju Network for Human Rights and Democracy
The 2007 Gwangju International Peace Forum began afoundational process of establishing a regional network for actionamong democracy advocates, human rights defenders and social movementactivists based on the collective experience of the struggle fordemocracy and human rights and a sense of solidarity created among theparticipants. Its main purpose is to promote regional cooperation fordemocratization based on people's rights and empowerment vis-?-visrepeated violence and atrocities inflicted by states as experienced indifferent societies in Asia. It will strive to complement(inclusively), and provide added-value and synergy (action-oriented andvictim-responsive) for the work of existing organizations, networks andcoalitions in Asia.
International Support for Democracy The May 18 Memorial Foundation seeks to strengthen its network with established democracies throughout the world. It has been supporting the work of international fora on human rights and democracy spearheaded by Korean communities in Germany and the United States of America. These international solidarity works aim to develop and strengthen the key role of Korea in establishing true democracy in the Asian region.
Day of the Disappeared, Sri Lanka The May 18 Memorial Foundation has continued to support the annual celebration of the Day of the Disappeared in Sri Lanka since 2001. In this event families of the disappeared who are seeking justice commemorate the victims of disappearances. In solidarity with the Families of the Disappeared, the Foundation sends delegates to this annual event and provides other organizational assistance. |
