Culture Project A. Performance Project The project rekindles the spirit of May 18 by drawing on the participation of citizens living in other cities. It develops new cultural events to be held throughout May, as well regular provincial performances such as Nan-jang In Free(cultural concert), the 5¡¤18 play by the youth theater, and also supports the creation of news plays and event.
B. Exhibition Project This project gives form to the spirit of May 18 through cultural communication with the citizens by utilizing history, culture and academic materials accumulated by 5¡¤18 Memorial Foundation. It is expected to play a role as the hub of a practical space for democracy, human rights and peace.
C. Literature Project The project creates an opportunity for the rejuvenation of the spirit of 5¡¤18 through literary productions. It will motivate literary aspirants to contribute to the expansion of the spirit of 5¡¤18 through their own vision. It will also help university students maintain strong historical consciousness of May 18.
Publicity Project A. Publicity Project We need to know the meaning and worth of the 5¡¤18 uprising in order to have a new understanding of the distorted image it used to have, and to make sure that historical justice is promoted. With this in mind, the publicity project establishes a direction, approach and strategy for memorial projects.
B. Development of Multi-media Contents We aim to produce accurate records to preserve the history of the 5¡¤18 foundation and the 5¡¤18 uprising in the present day. In order to create the 'culture of May' and promote the spirit of 5¡¤18 we will utilize various forms of multi-media, which will be broadcast by mass media generating effective publicity.
5¡¤18 Education Project A. Teacher Training This program is for teachers, and was initiated in response to the need to improve the quality of 5¡¤18 education in schools. We have a network of teachers interested in 5¡¤18 and contemporary history. Through the teacher training programme we have been actively involved in the realization of effective 5.18 education.
B. National High School Students' Discussion Competition This project aims to build up high school students' basic knowledge so that they recognize their role as democracy citizens. We enable them to imbibe the spirit of 5¡¤18 and to motivate them to make sound decisions.
C. May 18 Culture Festival for Youth RED FESTA This festival aims to provide an opportunity for youths to organize and participate in the cultural experience of the 5¡¤18 Uprising. It is not only sponsored by the 5¡¤18 Foundation but also by many other organizations. The year will be the fifth time we have held this event. The theme is 'We are May'. The youth will decorate an area of Kum-nam street in front of the former provincial office with red. The event is growing in popularity and getting bigger every year. Any youth who wants to join this festival can participate.
D. May 18 Cooperation Schools The May 18 Foundation connects with many schools in Gwangju in order to meet their need for formulation and stabilization of 5¡¤18 education. We operate several programmes including visits to historical places, the dispatch of 518 teachers to the school, and so on, depending on the character of the school. This programme is expected to expand since it is the objective of 5¡¤18 to provide additional education aside from that of their teacher.
E. Guided Tours to Historic Places and Work-Study Programme This project provides guides to introduce historical sites of the May 18 Uprising to visitors and to foster practical guidance for leaders who can conduct work-study programmes in the field. In this way people can understand and experience the value and the sprit 5¡¤18 uprising more easily.
Education Project for Democratic Citizens A. Democracy Field Work This project promotes a greater understanding of history and Korean democratization by enabling teachers and NGO activists to spend time 'in the field'. We believe the spirit of Gwangju can make a positive contribution to the nation. Several places have been visited as part of this activity.
B. 5¡¤18 Academy 5¡¤18 Academy, which will began its 5th session in 2008, is a program that provides opportunities for Korean NGO activists to take a rest and recharge. Through the Academy we aim make famous the name of the May 18 Foundation and to communicate to the people of Asia the nature of the 5¡¤18 Uprising. The May 18 Foundation has sent 4 teams to different Asian countries such as China, India, Nepal and so on in the last few years.
C. Humanitarian Class for Youth The objective of this program is to let the youth study the humanitarian-based spirit of 5.18 Uprising during their school holiday break so that they can become citizens who are independent, autonomous, and objective in their decision-making. It promotes the possibility of communication across humanity so that the 5¡¤18 is kept objectively free from egotism and exclusionism, and instead promotes solidarity for all. |
