Expansion of Solidarity Based on the May 18 Spirit

May 18 Global Business

The changing global environment surrounding democracy is also greatly influencing democracy in Korea, and along with this, expectations and interests in Korea's role in promoting democracy in the international community are increasing. Democracy and human rights issues are no longer just problems of individual countries but require a more systematic and strategic approach at the international level. Therefore, the May 18 Global Center aims to inherit the spirit of May 18 and promote various international projects through solidarity and cooperation to contribute to the development of democracy and human rights worldwide.

5‧18 Glocal Issue Monitoring Report

The 5‧18 Glocal Issue Monitoring Report is a status report conducted to promote the spread of the May 18 Spirit based on active cooperation and response to international democracy and human rights issues.

Through the continuous publication of reports, the 5‧18 Glocal Center of the May 18 Memorial Foundation aims to inform both domestic and international audiences about the state of democracy and human rights in various countries.

The 5‧18 Glocal Issue Monitoring Report, created through the research and writing of various contributors, is a valuable resource that helps to understand not only the current status of democracy and human rights in each country but also the overall situation, background, and other relevant contexts.

5‧18 Gwangju Democracy Fund

Based on the experiences of supporting grassroots organizations in Asia (2017-2021) and the Gwangju-Myanmar Solidarity Fundraising Project (2021-2022), the May 18 Memorial Foundation aims to continue its international solidarity support.

Through the 5‧18 Gwangju Democracy Fund, the May 18 Memorial Foundation extends a helping hand in the name of "Gwangju" and "May 18" to places around the world where democracy and human rights are severely violated, actively engaging in efforts to promote democracy and human rights globally.

With the warm interest and participation of citizens, as well as various resources such as the Foundation's funds and operational revenues, the Gwangju Democracy Fund supports the development of democracy and human rights worldwide, considering necessity, urgency, and on-site realities. Details about the Gwangju Democracy Fund, which recruits international civil society organizations active in various fields such as the establishment of the rule of law, human rights promotion, and civic movements, through announcements made between March and May each year, can be found through the link below.

English Webzine "Mayzine"

Mayzine is an English webzine published by the 5‧18 Glocal Center of the May 18 Foundation. Combining the words 'May,' referring to the month of May, and 'Magazine,' it aims to tell the stories of May.

Published twice a year, in the first and second half, Mayzine contains not only Foundation's news but also news from global civil society organizations and activists, urgent issues, special articles and contributions from activists, and news from the fields of democracy and human rights issues.

Mayzine, an annual record of international solidarity activities, will also be used as an NGO Report by the May 18 Foundation, which holds special consultative status with the UN ECOSOC NGO Committee.

Through Mayzine, the May 18 Foundation plays a role in raising awareness about the pain caused by state violence worldwide, contributing to the dissemination of stories about democracy and human rights.

International Conferences

Through various international events and conferences, we are working on establishing a network foundation through continuous exchanges and solidarity activities to advance as a global support organization for democracy, human rights, and peace. By dispatching delegations to international events and exchanging and cooperating with domestic and international organizations, we are enhancing private diplomacy to promote democracy and human rights, and we are in solidarity with Korean diaspora organizations in the U.S. and Europe to globalize the spirit of May 18.

Through joint promotion of the May 18 commemoration projects with overseas Korean diaspora organizations, we are promoting solidarity with these organizations and the globalization of the spirit of the May 18 Democratization Movement. By jointly promoting commemorative projects, we are strengthening solidarity and networks with overseas Koreans and contributing to the globalization of the spirit of the May 18 Democratization Movement.

GNMP (Global NGO Master's Program)

In collaboration with Gwangju Metropolitan City and Chonnam National University, this program aims to train talented individuals in democracy, peace, and human rights, offering the opportunity to participate in the master's program at the Chonnam National University Graduate School of Global NGO. This program lays the foundation for the globalization and diversification of research on the May 18 Democratization Movement and is expected to expand human exchanges based on the students' affiliated organizations and regions.
