Spreading the values and experiences of the May 18 Democratic Uprising
Through the integrated operation of the The May 18 Academy and the Gwangju Asian Human Rights Folk School, we build a network of activities domestic and international solidarity projects.
The May 18 Academy
The May 18 Academy is designed for international civil society activists It is held yearly about two weeks education/training program in the second half year. This course provides special lectures to promote better understanding fo South Korea democracy movement history and of democracy, human rights, and peace, offering a valuable opportunity to share experience among participants.
Current Situation
- Start of Gwangju Asian Human Rights Folk School (2004): Launched as a course for domestic activists
- Renamed as the ‘May 18 Academy’ (2012): Through integration with the Gwangju Asian Human Rights Folk School, transformed into a program for domestic and foreign activists
- Close down of the domestic activist course (2014): Changed into a course only for foreign activists, becoming an international academy
