태국 정부는 아논 남파와 시라폽 품펭풋을 석방하고

표현의 자유를 보장하라!

5·18기념재단은 아논 남파와 시라폽 품펭풋, 태국 국민들의 표현의 자유를 탄압하는 태국 정부의 비민주적인 행위를 규탄한다.

2024년 3월 25일 학생 활동가이자 인권 옹호자인 시라폽 품펭풋은 왕실모독죄로 유죄 판결을 받아 2년의 실형을 선고받고 구금되었다.

시라폽 품펭풋은 2020년 11월 18일에 열림 평화 시위에 참석해 입헌 군주제에서 왜 국민들이 국왕에 대해 이야기하는 것이 허용되지 않는 지에 대해 의문을 제기하는 연설을 했다. 이로 인해 그는 같은 해 12월 18일 기소되었고, 21년 5월 6일에도 기소되었으나 조건부 보석 허가를 받았다. 그러나 올해, 방콕 남부 형사법원은 그에게 국왕의 명예를 훼손한 혐의로 실형을 선고했다.

아논 남파와 시라폽 품펭풋은 범법자나 왕실의 적이 아니라 정치와 왕실 개혁을 통해 태국의 민주주의를 실현하고자 하는 민주주의의 수호자일 뿐이다.

5·18기념재단은 지난해부터 거세게 일어나고 있는 태국 국민의 민주화 요구를 탄압으로 일관하고 있는 태국 정부를 규탄한다. 또한 재단은 태국 민주화를 지원하기 위해 국제사회와 연대할 것임을 밝힌다.

태국정부는 아논 남파와 시라폽 품펭풋을 즉각 석방하고, 정치 및 왕실 개혁을 요구하는 민중에 대한 탄압을 중지하라!

[Statement]

The Thai government must immediately release

Arnon Nampa and Sirapob Phumphengphut, and

Guarantee freedom of expression!

We, the May 18 Foundation, condemns the undemocratic actions of the Thai government in suppressing the freedom of expression of Arnon Nampa, winner of the 2021 Gwangju Prize for Human Rights, Sirapob Phumphengphut and the Thai people.

On March 25, 2024, student activist and human rights defender Sirapob Phumphengphut was convicted of lèse-majesté and sentenced to 2 years in prison for criticizing the Thai monarchy. He has been held in detention.

Sirapop Pumphengput attended a peaceful protest on November 18, 2020, where he gave a speech questioning why people are not allowed to talk about the king in a constitutional monarchy. For this reason, he was indicted on December 18 of the same year, and was also indicted on May 6, 2021, but was granted conditional bail. However, this year, the Bangkok South Criminal Court sentenced him to jail for tarnishing the King’s reputation

Arnon Nampa and Sirapob Phumphengphut are not criminals or enemies of the royal family, but defenders of democracy who want to realize democracy in Thailand through political and monarchy reforms

The May 18 Foundation denounces the Thai government that has consistently oppressed the pro-democracy movement of its people. The May 18 Foundation will stand in solidarity with the international communities to support Thailand’s democracy.

Release Arnon Nampa and Sirapob Phumphengphut and stop oppressing the people who fight for political and monarchy reforms!
