벨라루스 독재정권의 인권탄압을 규탄한다

지난 8월 3일 코치의 태만 행위를 비난하여 강제 귀국 명령을 받아 공항으로 끌려갔던 벨라루스 육상 국가 대표 선수인 크리스티나 치마누스카야가 IOC와 폴란드 정부의 도움으로 폴란드로 망명을 하였다. 

이는 개인 간 문제가 아닌 28년간 이어져 온 알렉산드로 루카셴코(Alexander Lukashenko)의 독재정권 하에서 이뤄지는 정부의 개인에 대한 인권탄압을 보여주는 것이다.

1994년 정권을 잡은 루카셴코는 2019년 “독재는 우리의 브랜드”라는 말을 할 정도로 정권에 대한 야심을 드러내기도 하였다. 지난해 8월 대선에서 승리하여 또 한 번 집권하게 되었지만, 선거 당시 시아리히 치카노스키(Siarhei Tsikhanouski), 빅타르 바발카(Viktar Babaryka) 등 유력 후보들을 체포‧구금하거나 리투아니아와 러시아로 피신케 하는 등 재집권에 대한 강한 야욕을 보였다. 벨라루스 국민들은 이에 맞서 루카셴코 정부 비판과 새 총선 및 대선을 요구하며 민주주의 그리고 정의와 평화를 위해 대규모 시위를 이어나가고 있다. 

하지만 벨라루스 경찰은 시위대를 향해 고무탄, 물대포, 최루탄 등을 쏘며 구타, 구금, 고문을 자행하였다. 평화 시위를 펼치는 야당 인사, 독립 언론들, 그리고 일반 시민들은 체포거나 망명길에 올랐다. 8월 3일 정부 탄압을 피해 우크라이나로 이주한 벨라루스인을 돕던 사회운동가인 비탈리 쉬쇼프(Vitaly Shishov)의 사망 사건은 루카셴코 정부의 살해가 아닌지 의심되고 있는 상황이다.

이처럼 벨라루스는 전례 없는 인권 위기를 겪고 있다. 이에 5‧18기념재단은 벨라루스 독재정권의 시민들에 대한 탄압을 중단하고 구금, 체포된 사람들을 즉각적이고 무조건적으로 석방할 것을 요구하며, 벨라루스의 자유와 민주주의를 보장할 것을 촉구한다.

We Condemn the Human Rights Abuses of the Belarusian Dictatorship

On August 3rd, Belarusian sprinter Kristina Timanovskaya, who was ordered to return to the airport after criticizing her coaches, fled to Poland with the help of the IOC and Polish government. 

This is not an individual matter, but it shows the government’s suppression of human rights against people under the dictatorship of Alexander Lukashenko, which has continued for 28 years.

Lukashenko, who came to power in 1994, expressed his ambition for the regime to the point where his press secretary said in 2019 that “dictatorship is our brand.” He won the presidential election in August of last year and came to power again, but during the election, he arrested and detained prominent candidates such as Siarhei Tsikhanouski and Viktar Babaryka. or forced them to go to Lithuania and Russia. Likewise, he showed strong will for retaining power. In response, the Belarusians are continuing large-scale protests for democracy, justice, and peace, and criticizing the Lukashenko administration and demanding new general and presidential elections. 

However, the Belarusian police fired rubber bullets, water cannons, and tear gas at the protesters, beat, detained, and tortured them. Opposition politicians, independent media outlets, and ordinary citizens who participated the peaceful protests have been arrested or fled into exile. The death of Vitaly Shishov on August 3, a social activist who helped Belarusians that migrated to Ukraine to escape from government oppression, is suspected of being murdered by the Lukashenko government. 

As such, Belarus is experiencing an unprecented human rights crisis. Therefore, the May 18 Memorial Foundation calls for an end to the persecution of citizens caused by the Belarusian dictatorship, the immediate and unconditional release of those detained and arrested, and the guarantee of freedom and democracy in Belarus.

※ Belarusian in Korea will visit Gwangju and hold an event to commemorate the 1st anniversary of the Belarusian Democratic Uprising against Lukashenko’s human rights abuses and long-term dictatorship at the May Memory Repository inside of the May 18 Memorial Foundation. The May 18 Memorial Foundation will actively support the struggle for democracy of Belarusian living in Korea and plans to seek solidarity in any possible way.
